Looking through Lenses: A Media Literacy Skill: Gender Lens

Gender Lens

When we analyze with the lens of gender in mind, we are looking at the text's gender related issues or attitudes toward gender. The assumption is that men and women are different: in how they act, what they buy, and what their preferences are.

Questions and Strategies for Using Gender as a Lens

  • Consider the genders presented in the media. What role does gender play in the source?
  • Observe how gender stereotypes might be reinforced or undermined. How does the text reflect or reject the role of gender in society?
  • Imagine reading/viewing the media from the point of view of someone of a different gender.
